Visit SecondLife: a higher ed guide to the 3-D online virtual world

This selection of interesting locations in SecondLife has been prepared as a companion guide of the article I wrote about the 3-D online virtual world for the June 2007 issue of University Business.

  • Since I wrote the article, SL and NMC have announced an upcoming initiative: a special SL account creation process for higher ed folks directing your SL avatar to a more higher ed user-friendly orientation island. This new initiative should be released sometimes in June.
I’ll let you know as soon as it’s implemented on my section about SL news. So, if you’re interested, make sure you subscribe to the email newsletter or the blog RSS feed.
  • Looking for campuses and initiatives conducted by universities and colleges?
Just browse SimTeach’s list and click on the SLurls (i.e. web shortcuts to teleport to SecondLife addresses)
  • Want to tour Vassar College SL campus in a red and black flying saucer?
Once you’ve installed the application and created your SL avatar, just go to the teleportation booth ;-)
  • Want to meet and talk with higher ed folks – their avatars at least?
Request a guest membership to the NMC Campus and attend one of their free events.
  • Karine Apogee

  • Want to meet with a familiar face in SL?
Send me an IM in-world. My SL name is Karine Apogee, and I’ll try to schedule a meet-up with everybody sometimes this summer.

I’ll keep updating this page with new resources in the future, but this should get you started.
