While many of us are waiting for the results of the beauty contest the US News and World Report college rankings to be published later this month, I thought you might be interested in the Higher Ed Experts‘ Preliminary College Rankings:

What complex algorithm (or data manipulation) could have resulted in such rankings?
Nothing of that sort, but I can assure you that these rankings reflect indeed a statistical reality: the number of registered HEE members for each institution (the number in parenthesis)
As a result, no need to launch a ban on Higher Ed Experts (although that could result in extensive media coverage in Inside Higher Ed or The Chronicle) if you’re not happy with your institution rank or if you can’t even see its name listed in the final top 30 list (476 institutions are represented at Higher Ed Experts – the full list would have definitely been too long for a blog post).
If you want to improve your institution rank (and proudly display a badge on your personal website or blog — don’t think they will let you add it to your college homepage though), there’s still plenty of time before I release the final list when the US News & World Report Best Colleges in America is published in a few weeks.
The badge will be sent to the members working in the top ten institutions (let’s have some fun for a change, shall we?).
