A great interactive campus tour on the cheap with the help of YouTube and students for Saint Michael’s College

While nothing will ever replace campus visits for prospective students, online tours have become a sought-after web feature in the early college selection process. Unfortunately most of the solutions out there don't come cheap - and can be very, very expensive - especially if you want to embed some interactivity in your online campus tour. The interactive campus tour designed and produced by Mallory Wood, assistant director of marketing at Saint Michael's College (as well as a young alum), proves that it doesn't have to be that way. It's actually possible to come up with a nice online interactive tour on a dime...

And the winner of the free #heweb10 conference pass is…

September 15, 2010 |  by  |  #heweb10 High Ed Web, Conferences, Fun  |  3 Comments

In my Tuesday newsletter this week, there was a call for a chance to win a free High Ed Web Conference registration (not subscribed yet? Subscribe now so you don't miss another opportunity to win cool stuff) The conference is sold out, so I got a good number of entries. What's funny is that the winner went beyond the usual "count-me-in" email, he gave a top 10 reasons for wanting to go to the #heweb10 conference including a short video spoof of the Old Spice commercial: 10. About to begin a massive Wordpress transition. Need guidance and insight. 9. Most likely location for...

CSU uses Twitter to power dynamic updates on a… billboard

September 14, 2010 |  by  |  Marketing Strategy, More with Less, Technology, Twitter  |  1 Comment

A few institutions have used Twitter to broadcast text updates to mobile phones (I remember writing in one of my UB columns about Allegheny College distributing this way updates about orientation). However, this is the first time I've heard of a university marrying the old and the new by broadcasting updates from its Twiter account to a digital billboard on a highway as John Strubel, Director of Integrated Marketing at CSU, announced a few days ago in an email: "Charleston Southern University is the first business and only athletic program in the Charleston, South Carolina market to incorporate live in-game...

Higher Ed Live: 30 minutes of weekly live streaming about the latest higher ed news and trends

September 13, 2010 |  by  |  Facebook, Higher Ed Media, Higher Ed TV  |  3 Comments

Our little world of higher ed has finally its cable TV talk show - except it's not on cable TV and it's pretty good. It looks like Seth Odell (who works at UCLA and blogs at As Media Change) did it. After weeks of preparation Seth has launched a great new project: Higher Ed Live, a 30-minute live streaming show scheduled on Sundays at 7PM ET. While I didn't managed to watch the show live, I caught the archived version this morning. Tim Nekritz from SUNY Oswego was the inaugural guest and did a great job sharing news and resources about Facebook Places,...

The State of Online Analytics in Higher Ed In this column I also...

Higher Ed TV: Not your average library video tour by Juniata College

September 7, 2010 |  by  |  Facebook, Higher Ed TV, More with Less, PR & buzz, Video  |  3 Comments

Last week Rick Stutz, Coordinator of E-Communications at Juniata College, emailed me to share the video tour that was created for his college's library. This funny 4-minute video piqued my interest, so I decided to find out how it had been done. Rick Stutz, Nathan Wagoner, Director of the Digital Media Studio and John Mumford, Library Director (who stars in the video) answered collectively my questions by email. 1) Can you tell us a bit more on how this video was produced? The idea started with a simple insight: a 'tour' of a building like...

How an award-winning magazine is made: Illumination from the University of Missouri

September 1, 2010 |  by  |  Online magazines, Publications  |  2 Comments

The online version of Illumination, a magazine published by the University of Missouri, won both best online magazine eduStyle awards (judged and People's choice) this year. As a judge for this category, I was really impressed by the quality of its design and the great use of multimedia. That's why I contacted Illumination's designer, Joshua Hughes, multimedia specialist at the Office of Research, to find out how this little gem was put together. As you will see in this email interview, greatness comes with a price: time, work and talent. Illumination Magazine, Research at the University of Missouri - Spring...
